End of a cycle

 Good morning everyone!

This past week was a bit of an up and down.  Kaleb had several rough days where keeping his eyes open hurt and took too much energy, bone pain, stomachaches/pain, headaches and numb finger tips just to name a few of the challenges that come with Chemo and the drugs that are meant to help him kill the cancer.  On Thursday Kaleb had his hair dresser cut his hair to a shorter length (his hair was so long it could almost touch his shoulders) by Sunday night he had lost almost all of his hair so he called his sister and they talked.  Cancer does not wait until you are ready... Kaleb asked Matt to shave the rest off.

Yesterday Kaleb and I headed into London for a non-chemo appointment.  Matt made sure the car was warmed up and ready to go including a speaker so we could have music along the way :) Kaleb was exhausted as he did not sleep very well so once we got out of the town limits he dosed off to sleep.  I was able to enjoy a very yummy apple cheddar biscuit and listen to my music while driving yet another new route to London.

Once we checked into the PMDU Kaleb was weighed and had his blood work done.  We then headed off to the Children's Cardiology Unit to have his Echo and EKG tests done.    The technician was relieved when he saw Kaleb was a teen (this meant the technician did not have to watch/listen to Paw Patrol yet again)  He picked a movie for Kaleb to watch while the tests were being done, and it turned out to be one of Kaleb's favourites... Kung Fu Panda.

After we were done there we headed back to the PMDU, where we waited for the Dietician to come and talk to us.  She was very happy with Kaleb's weight gain, he gained a full 6 LBS this past week!!  She was happy with the food log we provided her with and has made a few new suggestions to help Kaleb maintain his gains without feeling like he is over eating. (this is something he struggled with this past week). Ideally she would like to see him eat every 2 hours and only eat half meals so that his stomach does not feel sore/off (so basically smaller portions but more frequently).  We will meet with her again next week and look at more then.

Kaleb developed a rash over the week so it was decided that he should be tested for chicken pox even though they were very confident that it would not be. After that test, they talked about how to care for his skin. Kids enduring chemotherapy tend to get sensitive skin and with Kaleb having been a redhead he already has sensitive skin to start so the skin will need to be protected more so.  His blood work came back and his numbers are climbing back up so he has been cleared to go get his first dose of the Covid Vaccine.  (that is the plan for this morning)

Next week is the start of Cycle 2 so we will be in London for a 5 day stretch of daily chemo treatments.
